Finding a New Normal (for now)

It’s been a week since I pressed the reset button and decided to take my life in a whole new direction. Fortunately, I have some time before everything needs to come together and I want to use the time productively.

As someone who has ADHD, freedom is nice and I’m enjoying the opportunity. But also, as someone with ADHD, I know that the time can disappear if I’m not intentional with it and I want to use this time to set up the future I want.

I decided that I have a month of grace to just explore, recharge and take time to reflect on my goals, interests and priorities. But even with this month, I need to keep in productive mode, and I want to keep a “normal” workday. With that in mind, my first “new normal” will be to continue to get up at the same time and having a plan that takes me to 5pm. I still have flexibility to make appointments, go for a walk and do personal things, I just need to be keeping active. It isn’t time for napping, watching tv or zoning out.

Even though I am not planning to “work” right now, I want to use this time productively so that when August comes, I have an idea of what the future will look like and I’ve done some preliminary research.

In order to provide some structure and framework for this time, I have the following goals:

  • Health & Wellness – develop healthy habits, learn more about Diabetes and ADHD to develop strategies and habits to be successful, even when life moves more quickly and I start working
  • Creative Writing – develop my skills through short story writing, learn more about how to structure and write a novel, want to be able to develop a writing habit the works for my style and can be maintained when I add “work” into the schedule
  • Work/Business – yes, my preliminary thoughts are about starting my own business so that I can work from home, I need to research and explore options for the business, look at training opportunities to develop skills needed for the business (essentially, I want to be ready to know if this is viable and work towards what is needed in August)
  • Finding some fun, pursuing interests – my life has felt so busy and overwhelmed by what has to be done, I’ve lost touch with what I might want to do, I want to take some time to check out things I might like to do

You’ll get to follow along and see how I do.

Have you ever had the opportunity to step out of your life without consequence for a month? What did you choose to do?

If you haven’t been fortunate to have a paid break that wasn’t your vacation, how would you want to use it? One month, no need to go to work or keep up with work, no work piling up when you return, just a bonus month to do with what you please. What picture comes to mind for you?

Sun, Sea and Beaches
Sun and sand? Relax and refresh? Party and explore?

Vacation?

Like trees reflecting in the water, sometimes we need to step back and see a version of ourselves when we're not in the middle of things.
Would you use the time to focus on YOU?

Will you attack the to-do lists that keep growing?
