Last week marked four weeks since pressing the reset button and having the freedom to choose where I am spending my time. As I discussed in the So Many Thoughts, So Little Time, I had identified that July was to be the month that I didn’t make any long term decisions and used the time to work on me (wellness habits) and explore to see what I actually like doing.
I learned a few things this month:
- I really enjoy creative writing and want to do a lot more of it. I have a novel inside of me that I need to write.
- I have wellness habits and practices that need to be prioritized so that I can be my best self for whatever I choose to do.
- When I work for others, I prioritize their needs ahead of my own and my investment of time and energy encourages me to let my wellness habits and interests take a back seat.
- I do need to work to maintain my lifestyle and although I have some flexibility now, I will need to work next year. In order to not “end up” or feel pressured to just take the first thing available, I need to start working towards it now.
- Learning and trying new things gives me energy.
- I hate doing the same things and having too many routines that don’t allow for creativity and flexibility to pursue projects.
- I want to give back to the community in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming or overscheduled.
As I put these things together and look to the future, I’ve decided that I want to be able to work from home as it gives me more control and ability to follow the wellness habits I have established. The wellness habits are important to my overall health and need to be prioritized.
I want to work enough to provide the income I require but want to have enough space and time to pursue creative writing.
I don’t need work to get me out in the community, I can use volunteering to stay connected in the community.
The Balance framework that I’m going to focus on in August is to maintain these four pillars:
- Me/Wellness – I need to ensure that I prioritize healthy habits and continue to work on managing my medical conditions.
- Creative Writing – I want to write my first novel, use short story writing to help develop my skills and continue to participate and seek out opportunities to learn more about the craft.
- Giving Back/Community – I am currently on the Board of the Literacy Society and will continue to serve on the Board. I may look at situational volunteering but I won’t drive to fill hours with more commitments.
- Business/Security – I need to work on establishing my business so I’m ready to work part time towards the end of this year and “full time” next year. Full time isn’t about working 40+ hours a week, it is about working enough to fulfill my financial needs.
I’m sure I’ll need to refine these pillars and learn how to find balance across the four pillars. Stay tuned to see how it goes.
